After more than 20 years at 1629 Walnut Street, Helix Architecture + Design has relocated to 220 W. 18th, a new multi-tenant office development in the Crossroads Arts District. Helix was in the process of designing the transformation of the historic Film Row buildings into modern, boutique offices when the opportunity to relocate arose organically.

The office development brings together two buildings, replacing an alleyway with a new outdoor amenity area for the buildings’ tenants. As a progressive model for workplace design, tenants have access to shared amenities such as conference rooms, a mother’s room, and a work café. The adaptive reuse of these buildings — some of the few remaining Film Row buildings in the country — celebrates the historic features such as glazed brick, curved details in the handrails, and hints of gold and red that offer a sense of subtle glamour.

In its new space, Helix created the ideal studio environment for its team members to collaborate. It provides the variety and diversity of workspace that employees desire to be productive and creative. The open-office workstations are organized around areas for teams to activate the office with pin-up space to devise a project concept, touchdown spots for impromptu conversation to solve a complex detail, and makerspace to use tools needed for hands-on design.
